Acupressure Precautions

Acupressure's healing touch is safe to do on yourself and others as long as you pay attention to some basic commonsense precautions.

Patients with life-threatening diseases and serious medical problems should always consult their doctor before receiving acupressure. Avoid the abdominal area if you have intestinal cancer, tuberculosis, a serious cardiac condition, or leukemia.

Avoid the abdominal area during pregnancy. Be more gentle and careful when applying acupressure to a pregnant woman.

Apply finger pressure gradually to enable the tissue layers to respond in a healing manner. Never press into the body abruptly. If an area hurts excessively when you apply pressure, use a light touch instead.

Use a lighter, more sensitive touch in the lymph areas, such as throat, groin, below the ears, and the outer breasts near the armpits.

Do not press directly on a serious burn until it has healed.

Ulcerous conditions and infections should receive medical care.

Do not work directly on a recently formed scar or tumor. During the first month after injury or operation, do not apply pressure directly onto the affected site.

Avoid practicing self-acupressure under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
