1. Cure a Tickling Throat When you were 9, playing your armpit was a cool trick. Now, as an adult,
you can still appreciate a good body-based feat, especially if it
serves as a health remedy. Take that tickle in your throat: It’s not
worth gagging over. Here’s a better way to scratch your itch: Scratch
your ear. “When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a
reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm,” says Scott
Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center
in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. “This spasm relieves the tickle.”
2. Experience Supersonic Hearing
If you’re stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with
your right ear. It’s better than your left at following the rapid
rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen
School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you’re trying to identify
that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the
sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones. 3. Calm Yourself With Cold Water
Nerves getting the best of you. Take a deep breath and spash cold water on your face.
This triggers the mammalian diving reflex that is genetically in all
animals including humans. The lower temperature of the water and you
holding your breath also causes your body to think it’s diving into cold
water. This reflex allows you to use oxygen more efficiently. 4. Overcome Your Most Primal Urge To Pee
Need to pee? No bathroom nearby? Fantasize about what ever turns you on.
Thinking about sex and arousing fantasies preoccupies your brain, so
you won’t feel as much discomfort, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of
male reproductive medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. 5. Feel No Pain While Giving Blood
Love donating blood but hate the needle prick? German researchers have
discovered that coughing during a needle stick can lessen the pain.
According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the
trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and
spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal
cord. 6. Swallow Your Horse-Sized Supplements
Those huge health supplements are sometimes a pain to swallow. Want to
swallow more than one at a time without gagging? Try this trick to get
them down: take a drink of water, and tilt your head forward instead of
backward. The capsule should float, and will be at the back of your
throat, ready to swallow. 7. Clear Your Stuffed Nose
Forget Sudafed. Here’s an easier, quicker, and cheaper remedy to relieve
sinus pressure: Alternate thrusting your tongue against the roof of
your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger. This
causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the
mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant
professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic
medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you’ll feel
your sinuses start to drain. 8. Fight Acid Reflux By Sleeping Position
Worried that chilli will repeat on you tonight? Try this preventive
remedy: “Sleep on your left side,” says Anthony A. Starpoli, M.D., a New
York City gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at New
York Medical College. Studies have shown that patients who sleep on
their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The
esophagus and stomach connect at an angle. When you sleep on your right,
the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach
acid to slide up your throat. When you’re on your left, the stomach is
lower than the esophagus, so gravity’s in your favor. 9. Cure Your Toothache
Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area
between your thumb and index finger. A Canadian study found that this
technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with
using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area
of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands. 10. Make Burns Disappear
When you accidentally singe your finger on the stove, clean the skin and
apply light pressure with the finger pads of your unmarred hand. Ice
will relieve your pain more quickly, Dr. DeStefano says, but since the
natual method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, the
skin is less likely to blister. 11. Stop the World from Spinning
Feeling dizzy? Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear
responsible for balance–the cupula– floats in a fluid of the same
density as blood. “As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula
becomes less dense and rises,” says Dr. Schaffer. This confuses your
brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second
opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand
are so sensitive, this works better than the conventional
foot-on-the-floor wisdom. 12. Unstitch Your Side
If you’re like most people, when you run, you exhale as your right foot
hits the ground. This puts downward pressure on your liver (which lives
on your right side), which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side
stitch, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men. The
fix: Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground. 13. Stop A Nose Bleed
Put some cotton on your upper gums–just behind that small dent below
your nose–and press against it, hard. “Most bleeds come from the front
of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose,” says Peter
Desmarais, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Entabeni
Hospital, in Durban, South Africa. “Pressing here helps stop them.” 14. Make Your Heart Stand Still
Trying to quell first-date jitters? Blow on your thumb. The vagus nerve,
which governs heart rate, can be controlled through breathing, says Ben
Abo, an emergency medical-services specialist at the University of
Pittsburgh. It’ll get your heart rate back to normal. 15. Thaw Your Brain Freeze
Press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much
as you can. “Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely
cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too,” says Abo. “In
compensating, it overheats, causing an ice-cream headache.” The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside. 16. Prevent Near-Sightedness
Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber,
O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. “It’s usually caused by
near-point stress.” In other words, staring at your computer screen for
too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the
day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a
few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time.
Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick
involuntary muscles–like the eyes–into relaxing as well. 17. Wake Up a Limb That Feel Asleep
If your hand falls asleep while you’re driving or sitting in an odd position, rock your head from side to side.
It’ll painlessly banish your pins and needles in less than a minute,
says Dr. DeStefano. A tingly hand or arm is often the result of
compression in the bundle of nerves in your neck; loosening your neck
muscles releases the pressure. Compressed nerves lower in the body
govern the feet, so stand up and walk around if they fail you. 18. Impress Your Friends
Next time you’re at a party, try this trick: Have a person hold one arm
straight out to the side, palm down, and instruct him to maintain this
position. Then place two fingers on his wrist and push down. He’ll
resist. Now have him put one foot on a surface that’s a half inch higher
(a few magazines) and repeat. This time his arm will cave in. By
misaligning his hips, you’ve offset his spine, says Rachel Cosgrove,
C.S.C.S., co-owner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California.
Your brain senses that the spine is vulnerable, so it shuts down the
body’s ability to resist. 19. Breathe Underwater
If you’re dying to retrieve that quarter from the bottom of the pool,
take several short breaths first–essentially, hyperventilate. When
you’re underwater, it’s not a lack of oxygen that makes you desperate
for a breath; it’s the buildup of carbon dioxide, which makes your blood
acidic, which signals your brain that somethin’ ain’t right. “When you
hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity,” says
Jonathan Armbruster, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at Auburn
University. “This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen.”
It’ll buy you up to 10 seconds. 20. Encode Long-Term Memory
Your own! “If you’re giving a speech the next day, review it before
falling asleep,” says Candi Heimgartner, an instructor of biological
sciences at the University of Idaho. Since most memory consolidation
happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely
to be encoded as long-term memory.
21. Relieve a Migraine Instantly
The next time you are about to reach for some pills to get rid of your
headache, use your thumb and forefinger and pinch down on the muscle on
the web of your hand (thumb on the back of your hand and forefinger
underneath) and press for 2 minutes. Repeat. Most headaches and
migraines will ease after just 4 minutes. This shiatsu point addresses
headaches by dispersing stagnant Ki (i.e. blocked energy) and moving
blood in the head, neck, and other parts of the body.
Fear is an emotional response to threats and danger. This unpleasant
sensation shows up regardless whether the threats is real or just
perceived as such. Having fear when there is a real danger is a good
thing. Because it’s connected to your survival. However having fear when
the danger is invented in your head is often not so good. Some of
people are afraid of using the elevator, flying, driving, being in dark
or small places, etc. According to statistics, a fear of giving a
public speech, comes second to the fear of death, which takes the first
place. Often people with chronic diseases are susceptible to fears and some of those have those diseases because of those fears. So
if you observed yourself in fear when you know there is no real danger,
won’t it be nice to be able to let go of fear? Let’s look at how Su Jok
can help you accomplish that in a matter of minutes, using the
following simple and highly effective technique. Sometimes it works in a
matter of seconds, especially with kids.
Step 1 Let’s
begin with a red coloured felt-tip pen. Yes, yes be not surprised. In fact colors
have powerful energy. For example emotion of fear is of black color, and
emotion of joy — red and consequently if you paint over an area
corresponding to kidneys (fear is driven by kidneys) in red color that
will suppress the emotion of fear and replace it with the emotion of
joy. Points of the kidney are shown on figures 1 and 2.
These points are on the back of a palm in a small recesses.
Step 2 Next paint over the area of the brain with dark blue color. That also promotes removal of emotion of fear. See figure 3.
Step 3 Attach magnet stars to your palm as shown on figure 4, using a band-aid or some other alternative.
The
magnets can be ordered from Internet. If you can’t find one, use any
round metal subjects. Leave these magnets for 4
hours and do this procedure every day till your fear disappears and
especially do it before events that you know might trigger some fear in
you (e.g., an exam, flying, driving, etc.). This last step is needed only if you have some recurrent fears.

There’s something you’re doing about 16 times every minute, nearly 1,000 times an hour, 25,000 times a day, and more than 8 million times every year.
But chances are, you’re not doing it right.
As you’ve probably guessed by now, the answer is:Breathe. It’s pretty clear that if we stop breathing, things won’t go so well. But did you know that there really is a right way to breathe and a wrong way to breathe? Most of us don’t give much conscious thought to our breathing. But that’s a mistake. Why? Because proper breathing is probably the fastest and easiest way to
instantly lower your stress and feel more relaxed – and guess what? It’s free! Let’s start with the wrong way to breathe – the way many people are doing it. Try this right now: Take 5 short, shallow breaths. Did you notice that you almost instantly feel more tense, more uptight, more stressed? That’s because short, shallow breathing is the body’s natural way to jump-start the “fight or flight” response. Meaning, your body is basically telling itself, “Hey, get ready to
fight this thing that’s threatening me or flee this thing that’s going
to attack me!” Not exactly a recipe for relaxation, happiness, or creativity, is it? You will breathe nearly 25,000 times today. Breathe properly. You’ll feel better in an instant. Now try this: Take 5 nice, long, deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose. Hold for the count of 3. Breathe out through your mouth. Make sure you breathe through your diaphragm – meaning, let your stomach expand more than your lungs. (Breathing from your diaphragm will produce a deeper feeling of relaxation than just breathing from your lungs.) Feels better, doesn’t it? Congratulations! You have mastered the art of proper breathing or diaphragmatic breathing. It sounds so simple and basic. But remembering to breathe properly is probably the fastest and
simplest way you can instantly lower your stress, increase your
creativity, and feel better. You’re going to breathe about 25,000 times today. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to proper breathing today. And it won’t cost you a penny!
Positive Thinking helps reduce stress, improve health and leads to more happiness.
There's been a lot said about positive thinking, that it can not only reduce stress but can also bring miracles and help people overcome cancer and other medical and non-medical setbacks.
I'm not just saying this, science is now proving that positive thinking, your overall attitude and how you see the world has a direct impact on your life. The kind of positive thinking that results from being optimistic helps you manage stress better, improves your health and allows you to overcome many setbacks quickly and easily. The negative thinking that comes from being pessimistic doesn't help you cope with stress and will likely create more of that stress. If you think you're the pessimistic type, don't worry, you can turn things around - here's how ... Positive Thinking: How It Works
Positive thinking is about seeing the positive situation in your life and in the world. That doesn't mean you ignore negative events and don't prepare for the future. It's not about thinking that everything is going to be wonderful and no harm will ever come to you.
You have to be realistic and learn from past events that didn't work out for you.
Positive thinking means that you focus on finding solutions, approach those negative events a little differently and focus on having the best work out for you instead of always looking at the worst. You want to aim to see the glass as half full and not half empty.
So when you encounter unpleasant situations, you approach them differently and deal with them in a more productive and positive way. Positive thinking starts with your thoughts and your personal self-talk. These are the endless words and thoughts that you say to yourself throughout the day. These thoughts and words seem automatic. Some come from applying logic and reason, while others come from your perceptions, judgements, and interpretations based on a lack of information. It's this kind of self talk that is often negative and creates some serious damage and lead to more stress.
When you have more negative thoughts than positive thoughts then your outlook on life is likely to be pessimistic and you'll end up in more negative situations. You'll have more struggle and pain.
If your thoughts are positive, then you're most likely an optimist and you probably practice positive thinking daily. You'll enjoy life more and won't have as much stress to deal wtih.
Benefits of Positive Thinking
Over the past 20 years scientists, researches and Doctors have been citing the benefits of positive thinking. While most of these benefits help with your health, positive thinking can also help improve many areas of your life.
Let's take a look at how positive thinking can help with your health, and these benefits have been cited by many in the medical field: Lower levels of stress Stronger Immune systems Easily able to recover from surgery and other medical setbacks Longer life span More prone to be happy Less likely to be depressed Stronger hearts and reduce risks of heart disease Better able to overcome setbacks in life Better mental ability Overall better physical health
There's no clear explanation for why people who practice positive thinking enjoy the above benefits but researchers feel that having a positive outlook just helps you better cope with things and focus on solutions instead of magnifying problems. They're just better able to manage stress and setbacks than those who are more pessimistic. Also, people who are optimistic are usually more active physically and as a result, will tend to be healthier and live longer. They also tend to eat better, avoid alcohol, sugars and are non-smokers, all of which helps them enjoy better health. Stop the Negative Thinking
Negative thinking and negative self-talk can really make life miserable. Most people don't even realize how much negative self-talk they have. Here are some common examples of negative self-talk: Thinking of the worst: When ever something happens or if you're planning something or getting ready to make a change, complete a project, go out, etc. you automatically think of the worst. Something as simple as running into a little traffic makes you think that the worse is going to happen, that your boss will fire you for being late or that you'll have a miserable day. Magnifying: You magnify the worst and overlook or ignore the positive in situations. For example: you get a project completed at work on time, your boss pats you on the back and your colleagues compliment you. You get some feedback and someone suggests something that could have been slightly better. Instead of appreciating all the positive comments you received, you focus on the one little thing that didn't go so well and that's all you think about the rest of the day and evening. Take everything personally: When something goes wrong or doesn't work out you take it personally and you blame yourself for it, even if someone acknowledges that it wasn't your fault. For example: You're meeting a friend for dinner and they have to re-schedule. Instead of just re-scheduling and moving on, you think they changed the time and/or place because they didn't want to see you. Or if you're with friends and the waiter gets the dishes wrong, you think it's your fault because you changed what you ordered. It's either black or white: There's no grey area, things are either one way or another. They're either good or bad (and you see most as bad), they're black or white. There's no middle ground. You have to have everything perfect or it's no use.
These kinds of negative self-talk and negative thinking don't allow you to enjoy life, and they create more stress which has a negative impact on your health. You need to change this kind of negative self-talk to positive self-talk.
Apply Positive Thinking
The sooner you turn negative thinking into positive thinking, the better and it's a lot easier to do than you think, it just takes some time, and practice. After all, you're changing they way you think and creating a new habit - which takes time. Here are some things that you can do to be more positive and optimistic: Find the thoughts that need to change: If you want to be more optimistic and engage in positive thinking you first need to find out where you are most negative, and identify the negative thought patterns that need to be changed. For example: you might be negative at work, so track your thoughts, identify the negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. Start with one area and work on replacing those negative thoughts every day. Then move on to another area and so on. Laugh and have fun: Laugh at yourself and try to laugh at other things as much as you can. Laughter will reduce the stress and help eliminate the negativity. Find humor in things, even when they don't work out the way you want. You can either laugh or cry, choose to laugh. Do something you enjoy just for the fun of it - it will make the day much more pleasant. Eat Better, Be Healthy: Choose to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. The mind and body are connected. A health body leads to a health mind which leads to less stress and a better quality of life Randomly Track your Thoughts: throughout the day catch yourself thinking. Ask yourself if your thoughts are positive or negative. If you're having some negative thoughts, change them to positive thoughts. This kind of habit leads to positive thinking sooner. Practice Positive Self Talk: Choose to speak positive words to yourself and choose to have positive thoughts. Start slowly, and be kind to yourself. Use gentle words and when you find yourself saying something negative, change it to something positive. Try working with affirmations when done correctly this can help develop the kind of positive thinking you want.
Choose Positive People: Surround yourself with positive people. If you've been negative for a while, you'll find that you have a lot of negative people around you. So start surrounding yourself with positive people. They'll help you stay positive and give you the kind of advice that will help you in life. Negative people don't help you and will make life more difficulty or increase your stress levels.

There are a few ways you can use your affirmations. It is recommended that you take time to review all your affirmations, choose a handful and start with those, as your life changes, so will your list of affirmations. You will know when it's right to update them, at first, it will take some time to get into the routine of using them. Reiterate the selected affirmations during meditation time each day. Simply repeat to yourself your selected affirmations, slowly, calmly, and positively as if they are already true. Have your affirmations written on your Visualization Board. Your Visualization Board will be a reminder for you to reiterate in your mind your affirmations. This will help keep your mindset in the right place. Keep key words of your affirmations on notes around your workspace. You spend hours a day in your workspace, having keywords to remind you of your affirmations will allow you, in free moments during the day, to reiterate your affirmations to yourself in your mind. Keep key words of your affirmations on your mirror. As in the example with your workspace, your mirror, you spend time in the mornings and evenings each day, as you're brushing your teeth and grooming yourself, you can review your affirmations and use that time to re-affirm them. Create visualization images for your computer screen background and/or screen save. When you turn your computer off, or when you leave your computer desk for a while, that time can be used to impress on your subconscious your affirmations. Even if you don't have time to reiterate all your affirmations, simple pictures or words may be enough to get your mindset in the right place. Create your own MP3 file with your voice reiterating the affirmation, then move the file to your ipod or burn a CD to play the affirmations as you fall asleep. As you fall asleep, your mind is in it's most impressionable state. Use this time to help you relax, to get your mind in a state of relaxation to get a full nights restorative sleep and to reiterate, in your own voice, your affirmations.

Happiness is of two types, one is transient and the other long lasting. We can call the latter as true happiness. We come across many people in our lives who are full of energy, have a wide circle of friends and are always on the move. They want change and action all the time and give an impression of being happy. But their happiness is only transient, short lived and conditional. In reality, they are always dissatisfied and discontented, far from true happiness. True happiness is a great blessing and it brings contentment and satisfaction. It gives peace of mind and develops good qualities in a person. Life is full of challenges. All of us face different set of problems and obstacles. But these problems and obstacles are not meant to discourage or develop a negative attitude in us. Rather they are meant to evolve us by realizing our latent superhuman capabilities. If you are not happy, then it indicates you are not living happily. You have not learnt to accept the world as it is. So, all you need is a right attitude towards others. There are two main reasons of unhappiness. The first is self centeredness, when one always thinks of self gain without a thought of giving to others. According to Plutarch, 'Selfish people are victims of self conceit. They deprive themselves of life's richest blessings, which are happiness and peace of mind.' The second is to have improper desires or cravings. People desire for money, lusts and possessions. They look at wealth of others and crave to possess them too. It is good to strive for a better life, but craving for material things and not enjoying what one already has halts the growth process and makes one unhappy.
If one wishes to recover from depression, they need to take action. When one is depressed they do not want to think of the things that they need to do. Even if they realize the need to take action, even getting up and taking a bath, eating food or meeting friends seem like an effort for them. The activities that can help one to get out of depression are the things that one finds most difficult to do. However, as such things are not impossible, one needs to culminate the energy and the motivation to do the following simple activities which will help one to get out of depression.
Cultivating Supportive Relationships
The first step that needs to be taken in order to recover from depression is to start off with small goals. As one starts with small goals and achieves them, they will slowly build from there. Even if one feels exhausted, they can take a short walk round the block or make a phone call to feel better. In order to get out of depression it is important to cultivate supportive relationships. It is very difficult to get out of a depressive state if one is alone. Getting social support plays a great role in helping to lift the fog of depression. Often, one may feel ashamed, guilty or not emotionally ready to face friends and family members and to talk about what happened. One needs to realize that such feelings are the direct effects of depression and one needs the support of loved ones to get out of such a state.
Turning To Family Members And Friends Whom One Can Trust – You need to reach out to the ones you love and trust and share your experiences with them. Seek their help and support or their presence around you.
Keeping Up With Social Activities – When one is depressed they feel comfortable being alone or in a shell. However, being around other people can be therapeutic. Join A Support Group – If you do not have family or friends to support you, it would be best to join a support group. There are many support groups which hold discussions on depression and how to deal with it. Simply being in such a group and hearing others talk about their feelings will help to alleviate your sense of isolation.
Stop The Negative Thoughts
When you are depressed you tend to put a negative spin to everything. That would include the way you see yourself, the situations you face, expectations from the future and others. It is vital to break out of the pessimistic frame of mind in order to get out of depression. How to challenge negative thinking processes:
Think Beyond Yourself – One should stop being harsh on themselves. It is necessary to have a more balanced approach towards oneself. Allow Yourself To Be Less Than Perfect – Many people who suffer from depression are perfectionists. They have high standards for themselves and they beat themselves up if they fail to meet them. This is a form of self-imposed stress that has to be negated by being more lenient on oneself. Socializing With Positive Minded People – There are many who look at the bright side of things and are optimistic. One should try and adopt such optimism even in bleak situations in order to feel lighter at heart. Keeping A Log Of Negative Thoughts – One should write down their negative thoughts in a journal. That way one can review their feelings even in a positive frame of mind. At such a time one can evaluate such feelings and understand whether there is much objectivity about such feelings. Taking Care Of Oneself
It is vital to take care of oneself in order to overcome depression. That includes many activities that one needs to inculcate daily to get out of the depressive state of mind.
Getting Eight Hours Of Sleep – One might be sleeping too much or too little. It is important to get eight hours of sleep and not less than that when one is depressed.
Exposure To Sunlight – It is important to get sunlight which has a positive effect on the mood. You could sit outside in the verandah or patio, take a short walk or sit at a park bench. Getting at least 15 minutes of sunlight is good for getting one’s mood lifted.
Keeping Stress At Bay – When one is depressed, they should not take on heavy work or stressful work schedules. At such a time concentration is low for which one may not be able to perform well in their work.
Taking Up Relaxing Habits – Trying yoga or going for a walk, trying meditation, taking up a hobby will help one to relax as well as get into a more positive frame of mind.
